On April 23, 2009, Telus Corporation and Telus Communications Inc. filed a patent lawsuit against WiLAN Inc., claiming they owned some of the company’s patents related to a method and apparatus for the demodulation and compression of digital signals.
One year later, on April 21, 2010, WiLAN Inc. announced it signed a final agreement to settle the lawsuit. As part of the settlement, WiLAN received a one-time payment in exchange for Telus giving up any rights it may have had to the patents-at-issue.
There were five United States patents and four Canadian patents involved in the lawsuit:

- U.S. Patent No. 5,369,670, issued November 29, 1994,
- U.S. Patent No. 5,555,268, issued September 10, 1996,
- U.S. Patent No. 5,570,305, issued October 29, 1996,
- CDN Patent No. 2,064,975, issued July 27, 2007,
- CDN Patent No. 2.067,436-9, issued April 28, 1992, and
- CDN Patent No. 2,108,103, issued on February 13, 2001.
